A Crazy Love Story
It started some 39 years ago. A couple of kids, minding their own and the universe put them face to face with one another in the middle of a high school chorus room. That skrawny little sophomore asked a shy little Junior if she'd be his girlfriend in the middle of a Foreigner concert and wouldn't you know it, she said, "Yes."
Now, pay no attention to the slick duds and that beautiful breath of fresh air pictured there. That wasn't the afore mentioned concert. This was some ballroom, putin on the ritz, banquet that he was going full Taco on to impress the girl.
Where was I? Oh yes, the Foreigner concert that got the ball rolling. It was her love of music and his way with colored pens and doodles that sent them on a teenage romance that few have experienced, much less, to fall back on. Though it wasn't all hearts and sweet nothings. When it came time for this girl to graduate and spread her wings, she knocked that junior flat on his butt as she soared out of sight headed for community college. Though heart broken and whining all summer long, this young boy would bounce back and forge ahead. They would both move on with one common spark. The spark of one's first true love.
So, yes, they moved on. They had babies. They made families. They disappeared to college. They joined the military. They got married. There were more babies. There was a divorce or two. Maybe yet another marriage. Then there were grand babies. And all the while that this was going on,
something was happening. A connection was being maintained. Though their paths took them in different directions, those same paths
inevitably crossed. Through all of their individual trials and triumphs, they would come together and share their lives with each other. Hometown trips and vacation get-aways, they would always find time to reconnect and visit.
For nearly 30 years they stayed as unique friends as their lives dipped and dove; twisted and turned until at one point their paths seemed to meet and run parallel.. It would be almost 28 years to the day that the shy little girl would reach out to that fresh young boy.
From there he asked her again and she said, "yes", again. This, of course, is no fairy tale. Though the years apart taught them both what they desired and what they despised, they still make huge mistakes and hurt one another deeply. Not all moments are filled with smiles, but every moment is the chance to start again. These two learn with every moment and if a spark can flicker for 30 years untouched, just imagine what happens when they fan the flame.
We were married in 2018 on the very day that I asked her to be my girlfriend at that concert. I had always confided in her that our lives would come full circle and she made that happen the day she walked back into my life. It has been exciting. It has been tough. We've made wonderful memories and had patches that were rough. But through it all, I'd want it no other way, because everyday brings the possibility of more of those irresistible smiles
